Why We Need To Maintain Our Immune System

by Mervis Westiroll

The world that we live in is a harsh one. As Darwin plainly stated, evolution is all about survival of the fittest. We we stood to be the strongest among all species. We became the most highly advanced creatures and became masters of all species on earth.

We survived because our bodies are strong enough to ward of health detractors. Bacteria, viruses, microorganisms and other harmful elements such as pathogens exist everywhere and our survival depended much on our immune system.

Our immune system is a natural mechanism in our body that keeps harmful organisms like bacteria, viruses and fungi away. With our immune system, these elements cannot proliferate. Without the protection of the immune system, our bodies are open to all types of foreign elements that are detrimental to our health. Imagine a decaying body. In just a couple of hours, you will see the first signs of microorganisms eating it up. The immune system automatically halts to a stop when the body dies. This is will happen to us if we do not have the natural protection of the immune system.

Weak bodies usually have weak immune system or natural protection. With weak and sickly bodies, its so easy to get infected. The most common among these bacteria or viral diseases are tonsillitis, croup and angina. Without any defense mechanism, our bodies will easily get infected with these.

Croup is an infection on the upper respiratory tract. The throat infection is caused by a certain virus. The treatment to this disease is epinephrine, steroids and antiviral treatments.

Tonsillitis on the other hand is inflammation of the tonsils due to viral or bacterial infection. Tonsillitis is commonly accompanied by fever and flu. For bacterial tonsillitis, antibiotics are enough. But for virus induced tonsillitis, no treatment has been found. For chronic tonsillitis, doctors have no choice but to cut them off in a procedure called tonsillectomy.

In order to maintain optimum health, we have to start with our immune system. The best way to ward of illnesses and diseases is to prevent them from invading the body.
