Positioning of the Head and Neck - Introduction

A Sinmed Posifix head and neck positioning system is composed of several items.
One can choose from different baseplates, varying from a basic acrylic head baseplate to more sophisticated carbon fiber IMRT baseplate that accommodates a wide variety of head, neck and shoulder masks. The carbon fiber baseplates have minimal beam attenuation and are therefore ideal for use in the treatment room. Acrylic baseplates are used in the mould room, simulator or CT scanner.

Each baseplate is indexed to the simulator, linear accelerator or CT couch by using one of the Sinmed aluminum fixation rails. A variety of simply attachable fixation brackets ensures a rigid lateral and longitudinal positioning of the baseplate onto any couch top. In addition, IMRT baseplates are mounted on and extend from the cranial end of the couch.

A range of head supports, made of low density polyethylene foam, is available for comfortable and consistent prone and supine positioning. Each head support fits snugly into any of the Posifix baseplates and dedicated pediatric cushions are also available.

The patient is immobilized by snapping the Posicast thermoplastic mask onto the baseplate with quick fasteners. This allows the technician to mould the mask perfectly around the facial contours of the patient.

To accommodate more complex treatment techniques, a range of options is available. A highly recommended option is the Positilt, which allows the head to be tilted in various angles towards the couch top plane and can be easily attached to all Posifix baseplates.
